Roots is seeking storytellers for Moms Like Me 2023
Moms Like Me, the signature annual Roots Family Collaborative event, is looking for people to share their stories onstage at The ELM on Saturday, May 13th, 2023.
Roots Family Collaborative and the Moms Like Me committee are looking for storytellers to develop their stories with storytelling coach Molly May and then share their stores at our annual event. As a committee member I feel the hardest part of planning and organizing the event is selecting storytellers. We always have more applicants than the four storytellers we choose. Please know that I understand the vulnerability of giving us your story and that we make our decision with much deliberation. I was a Because of this, we have provided some guidelines and suggestions below to help you decide if applying is right for you.
Most moms who are selected as storytellers have children that are at least one year old. In that first year, you are so in the thick of early parenting. (We want your experience to be as powerful as possible and we know that happens when you have more time and space to let that happen. This instead of saying that your experience will be better…) that your experience of preparing your story will be better if your babies are a bit older. Please apply next year! We want to hear your story.
If your story involves safety or legal challenges for you and your family we ask that you consider another aspect of your story to share at Moms Like Me. We understand that you need to work through this story though, and suggest that you come to a group that is a safe space such as Blossom Mom, or reach out to Roots for other ways of support.
If you want to apply because of the opportunity to work with Molly May, we understand. She is an incredible storytelling coach! However, please consider your desire to share your story onstage in such a public setting. Molly provides many options for you to write and work through your story. Please visit her website at https://www.mollycaromay.com/ to view her ever changing schedule of workshops, multi-week courses, and long term monthly and weekly material.
Finally, there is a significant time commitment involved with being a storyteller. We ask for a commitment to meet in person regularly. We also request that you attend a social event that we will hold in February. We will have a dress rehearsal a day or two before the event that you are required to attend and we ask that you are at the venue for most of the day of the event. If you feel your schedule may not accommodate this commitment, we would love for you to apply when it may work better.
We understand the healing and power that comes from sharing your story, and we know how important it is for every mom’s story to be heard. If serving as a storyteller for Moms Like Me doesn’t feel like the right opportunity for you, please look into our other Roots programs too. Re:born is a monthly event at Farmer’s Daughters Cafe where we have individuals share their story in a more intimate and less formal setting. We also offer Blossom Mom, Feeding Support Circle, and Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group that are all safe spaces to share and receive support.
If you are still ready to apply, please click on the link below. We cannot wait to hear your story. Thanks for having the courage to share it with others.
